Located on the east fork of the White River, south of Indianapolis, Columbus is the seat of Bartholomew County, Indiana. Originally named "Tiptonia" for General John Tipton, the town's name was changed to "Columbus" in 1821. General Tipton was upset over the change of names, and moved from Columbus. Later he became the Highway Commissioner for Indiana, and constructed the first bypass road ever built, detouring traffic around Columbus.
