Situated in the northern part of the state, in a region known as Michiana, Elkhart is a part of Elkhart County, Indiana. Its founders were Dr. Havilah Beardsley and his wife, Rachel Calhoun Beardsley, a cousin to Vice President John Calhoun. Beardsley chose the name "Elkhart" because the island at the confluence of the Elkhart and St. Joseph Rivers is said to resemble the shape of an elk's heart.
