Hammond is a city in Lake County, Indiana. The early settlement was known as "State Line", as it is located near the Indiana-Illinois border. In 1873, the unincorporated area officially became known as Hammond, after two brothers, George and Thomas Hammond, who established businesses there. The deciding factor in the choice of a name was a flip of a coin.
