Located along the Ohio River, Madison is the seat of Jefferson County, Indiana. The area was originally settled in the early 1800s by pioneers floating down the Ohio River in flatboats. Although it never realized that dream, the city was designed to be a state capital, with wide boulevards and space for government buildings and fine homes. Today, the city's entire downtown is on the National Historic Register.
