Iowa City, the seat of Johnson County in Iowa, was created in 1839, when it was declared the first capital of the newly admitted state of Iowa. That being the case, it was not the de facto capital until 1841, when construction of the city was complete. The first six Iowa General Assemblies met in the city at which time, Des Moines became the new capital.
