The city of West Liberty, Iowa is located in Muscatine County. It was settled in 1836, and the city proudly recognizes Mrs. Mary Nyce as "the first white woman that made a permanent home here." The town was surveyed in 1856, and it was thought to have been incorporated as a town in 1868, but through some sort of error which remains unclear, the town announced in 1884 that they were incorporating legally.
