The city of Hays is the county seat of Ellis County in Kansas. It was settled in 1866 in anticipation of the Kansas Pacific Railway. It was the quintessential old west town, and was, at various times, home to George Armstrong Custer, Wild Bill Hickock, and Calamity Jane.
