Situated in northeastern Kansas, about twenty-five miles east of Topeka, Lawrence is the seat of Douglas County. The city was founded along the banks of the Kansas and Wakarusa rivers in 1854, and named after Amos Adams Lawrence, a prominent politician and anti-slavery partisan.
