The Kansas city of Liberal is situated in Seward County. The first settler in the area S. S. Rogers, built his home there in 1872. As the only resident in the area, he would give travelers free water, and it was said by some of the travelers, “That's very liberal of you.” Mr. Rogers built a general store and post office in 1885, and he named the town after the comment so frequently made.
