The city of Merriam, Kansas is situated in Johnson County. It was founded in 1864 when David Campbell bought land on which he built his home. The town was called Campbellton in his honor. Incorporated as a third class city in 1950, and a second class city in 1957, it went by that name until 1870 when the first railroad station in town was built, at which time the town changed its name to Merriam in honor of the secretary/treasurer of the railroad, Charles Merriam.
