Located along the Kansas River in the central part of Shawnee County in northern Kansas, Topeka is the state capital and the county seat. Established in 1854, Topeka was one of the Free State town founded by Eastern anti-slavery men shortly after the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill.
