The seat of Boyle County, the City of Danville housed the first courthouse in Kentucky, as well as the first U.S. Post Office west of the Allegheny Mountains. Danville was part of the Great Settlement Area around Harrod's Fort, which was settled in 1774. The city was probably named for Walker Daniel, Kentucky's first District Attorney, who purchased the land, surveyed in 1783 and 1784, although the town wasn't officially established until 1787.
