Louisiana, the only state which is divided into parishes instead of counties, joined the Union in 1812. Although the capital is Baton Rouge, its better known city is New Orleans. Nicknamed the Bayou State, it is known for Mardi Gras and jazz. It was named after Louis XIV, who ruled over France from 1943 to 1715.
