Augusta is the seat of Kennebec County and the capital of Maine, the third smallest state capital in the United States. The area was first inhabited by members of the Plymouth Colony in 1629, then known as Cushnoc. Abandoned in 1661, it remained empty until 1754, when Fort Western was built during Dummer's War. Incorporated as Hallowell in 1771, the town was set off and incorporated as Harrington in 1797, its name changed to Augusta a few months later.
