Portland is Maine's largest city, and the seat of Cumberland County. The Native Americans called the area Machigonne, and the first recorded European settler was Captain Christopher Levett, who was granted 6,000 acres by King Charles of England to found a settlement in Casco Bay. The peninsula was first permanently settled in 1633 as a fishing village named Casco, which was changed to Falmouth, then to its current name in 1786. The village was destroyed twice during King Philip's War.
