Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, is an independent city named in honor of Lord Baltimore, who founded the Colony of Maryland. Although the state remained in the Union, when Union soldiers marched through the city in 1861, they were attacked by Confederate sympathizers, leading to the Baltimore riot of 1861. After the riot, the city was occupied by federal troops, and the entire state was under federal administration in order to prevent secession until the end of the war in 1865.
