The oldest settlement in the county, Elkridge is situated in Maryland's Howard County where Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties meet Howard. Being that it is on the banks of the Patapsco River, the settlement prospered when it was called Jansen Town in 1773. In 1825, Jansen Town burned, utterly destroying 90% of the houses in the village.
