The city of Hagerstown is the county seat of Washington County, Maryland. Located in a semi-rural area of Maryland, it is a statewide hub for transportation and commerce. It was founded in 1739 by a German immigrant named Jonathan Hager and was originally named Elizabethtown, in honor of his wife. The name was changed to its current name in 1813 due to the fact that it had been called Hagerstown by people in town for years.
