Rockville is the seat of Montgomery County, and the third largest city in Maryland. It is located in what is known as the Piedmont region, and crossed by Rock Creek, Cabin John Creek and Watts Branch. The first land patents in the area were obtained between 1717 and 1735, and within thirty years the area that is now the center of Piedmont was developed. Over the years it has been known by a number of names, including Owen's Ordinary, Hungerford's Tavern and Daley's Tavern.
