As the seat of Baltimore County, Towson is the second-most populated unincorporates county seat in the United States, after Ellicott City, Maryland. Towson was settled in 1752, and named after William and Thomas Towson, two brothers who came to farm the area. William's son, Ezekiel, established the Towson Hotel in 1768, and the settlement that grew up here was first known as Towsontown, and was named the county seat in 1854.
