Hampshire County is home to Hadley, Massachusetts, which was settled by Puritan families from Connecticut who started a new colony after a disagreement over doctrine in their local church in 1659. It was incorporated in 1661. Early in its history, the townspeople hid two Puritan generals, Edward Whalley and William Goffe, who were being sought by the Brits for their part in the public execution of King Charles I of England.
