As an early center for the labor movement, Waltham is known as the "birthplace of the American industrial revolution." Located in Middlesex County, Waltham was the original home of the Boston Manufacturing Company, a prototype for 19th century industrial city planning. First settled in 1634 as a part of Watertown, Waltham was incorporated as a separate town in 1738.
