The city of West Springfield, Massachusetts is situated in Hampden County. The city is often called "West Side" by locals, due to its position on the western side of the Connecticut River, across from the city of Springfield. It was settled in 1660 and incorporated in 1774 after a contentious town meeting which was held on both sides of the river and almost ended up in a government shutdown.
