Teaching, instruction, and training are all facets of education, which is the process of facilitating or acquiring knowledge, developing the power of reasoning or judgment, and preparation for mature life. It might also be referred to as the result produced by instruction, training, or study.

Education is a large portion of the city's economy and employment base, as the city includes several schools, public and private, at all levels.

Serving all of Mount Pleasant, as well as parts of Chippewa, Deerfield, Denver, Fremont, Isabella, Lincoln, Nottawa, Union Charter, Vernon, and Wise townships, the Mount Pleasant School District, provides a PK-12th-grade curriculum for approximately four thousand students. The district operates five elementary schools, one intermediate school, and two high schools.

The city has two parochial schools. Sacred Heart Academy operates a (K-6) elementary school and a (7-12) high school, both on the same campus, while Mount Pleasant Christian Academy is a traditional Christian school offering a PK-12th-grade curriculum.

Renaissance Public School Academy is a free public charter school serving students in preschool through the eighth grade.

Established in 1892, Central Michigan University enrolls more than 20,000 students at its main campus in Mount Pleasant, offering more than two hundred academic programs at the undergraduate, master's, specialist, and doctoral levels.

Mid Michigan College is a community college with campuses in Mount Pleasant and Harrison. Opened in 1965, Mid offers one- and two-year certificates and associate degrees in transfer, occupational, and health science programs, including career programs such as nursing, radiography, welding, CAD, and others.

Although not specifically within the city limits of Mount Pleasant, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College is closely identified with the city, and has a Mount Pleasant mailing address. SCTC is a public, tribal, land-grant community college established by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Committee in 1998. Enrollment is not limited to Tribal members, and the college offers associate degrees in Liberal Arts/General Studies, Native American Studies, and Business, which are transferable to local baccalaureate degree programs.

These are a few of the larger educational institutions and programs within the city, but there are others. Appropriate resources for this category may also include childcare centers, preschools, pre-kindergartens, and K-12 schools, whether public, private, or religious, as well as local homeschooling programs, vocational or technical schools, colleges, universities, and specialized instructional programs, such as driver training programs, beauty colleges, art, dance, and music schools, or others.
