The focus of resources in this portion of our guide is on education, teaching, instruction, and learning in Traverse City, Michigan.
Although teaching and instruction have similar definitions, they are not synonymous. The act of instruction involves showing or telling someone how to do something, while teaching explains how it is done. Teaching is more complex, in that it involves various techniques, and effective teaching acknowledges that people learn in different ways. There is a place for instruction in teaching, as when a student is instructed on how to perform an experiment or complete a test. In that sense, teaching and instruction are used together to produce the end result of learning, and all of this involves education.
Education is the process of giving or receiving general knowledge and skills. It can be formal or informal, and formal educational systems are operated by public school districts, religious institutions, or private non-profit or for-profit institutions.
