Albany is in Stearns County, Minnesota. The community is served by Interstate Highway 94 and Minnesota Highway 238, as well as County Roads 10, 41, 54, and 157. Along the Interstate, Avon is southeast of Albany, while Freeport is to the northwest. Other nearby communities include Collegeville, Farming, Greenwald, Holdingford, Meire Grove, Melrose, New Munich, Opole, Spring Hill, St. Anna, St. Anthony, St. Joseph, St. Martin, St. Rosa, and St. Wendel. St. Cloud is about twenty miles southeast of Albany. The city was incorporated in 1890, and its boundaries were originally defined by the Great Northern Railroad and Soo Line Railroad, although both have since been removed, the right of way now being used as hiking and bicycling paths, with one of the lines running from Avon through Albany to Sauk Centre now being the Lake Wobegon Trail, a paved bicycle, hiking, and snowmobile trail.
