Situated in northwestern Dakota County, Minnesota, the city of Apple Valley is a suburb of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The city’s origins go back to the mid-19th century as an agricultural community known as Lebanon Township. The first European-American settlers came around 1855 from the East Coast. Dakota County commissioners created Union Township in 1858, changing its boundaries and creating Lebanon Township from a portion of Union Township a few weeks later. The community was known as Lebanon Township until the late 1960s, and Apple Valley was incorporated as a town in 1968, becoming a city in 1974, named for Apple Valley, California. Bordering cities are Burnsville and Rosemont, and other nearby communities include Argonne, Bloomington, Credit River, Eagon, Inner Grove Heights, Lakeville, Orchard Garden, and Savage. Minneapolis, Minnesota is about twenty miles to the north, and St. Paul is about the same distance to the northeast.
