Located in lower central Carlton County, in eastern Minnesota, The city of Barnum is access through Interstate Highway 35, which runs through the southeastern part of the city, Carlton County Road 6 (Main Street), and County Road 61 (Front Street). Barnum is five miles northeast of Moose Lake and thirty-three miles southwest of Duluth. Other nearby communities are Atkinson, Automba, Blackhoof, Duesler, Duquette, Kettle River, Mahtowa, Nemadji, Nickerson, Otter Creek, Ronald, and Scotts Corner, and Sturgeon Lake. The annual Carlton County Fair is held in the fairgrounds at Barnum each summer. Incorporated in 1889, Barnum was named for George G. Barnum, paymaster of the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad, which later became the St. Paul and Duluth Railway.
