Battle Lake, Minnesota is in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Platted in 1881 and named for a nearby lake that was itself named for an 18th century battle between the Ojibwa and Sioux Indians, the small community is wrapped around the western shores of West Battle Lake in the Lakes Country region of central Minnesota. Several other lakes surround the city. Nearby communities include Clitherall and Underwood. Fergus Falls is about nineteen miles west of Battle Lake. The city is served by Minnesota Highways 78 and 210. Glendalough State Park, three miles from Battle Lake, was once a game farm owned by the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, but was designated a state park in 1991.
