Located in northern Redwood County, in southwestern Minnesota, the settlement that later became Belview was originally known as Jones Siding and Rolling Prairie. The Wisconsin, Minnesota and Pacific, a line of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad, extended its track to the area in 1884, crossing land owned by Hibbard Jones. The small city of Belview was platted by Jones in 1889, although a post office has been in operation there since 1887, and Belview was incorporated in 1893. The town was named for the French phrase meaning “beautiful view.” Belview is accessed primarily through County Road 7, which connects with Sacred Heart to the north and Seaforth to the south, and County Road 9, connecting with Delhi to the east and Echo to the west. Minnesota Highways 19 and 67 are a few miles south of Belview, where they intersect CR-7. Other nearby communities include Beaver Falls, Bechyn, Cottonwood, Hanley Falls, Redwood Falls, North Redwood, Vesta, and Wood Lake. Minneapolis, Minnesota is about one hundred and twenty miles east of Belview.
