Situated in central-eastern Minnesota, Big Lake is in Sherburne County, about forty miles northwest of Minneapolis and about thirty miles southeast of St. Cloud. US Highway 10 and Minnesota Highway 25 are the main routes through the city. Nearby communities include Monticello and Otsego, across the Mississippi River, Salida and Becker to the northwest, and Bailey and Elk River to the southeast. Until 1867, Big Lake was known as Humboldt. The lake for which the city was named was once a significant part of the town’s economy, as much of the ice used in metropolitan iceboxes prior to the common use of modern refrigerators was harvested from Big Lake. Lake Mitchell is also located within the city limits. Today, Big Lake is the northernmost terminus of the Northstar Commuter Rail, connecting the city and other northwest suburbs with downtown Minneapolis, as a large number of local residents commute to the Twin Cities area each day for work. Topics relating to the city or the surrounding township by the same name are appropriate for this category.
