Brooten, Minnesota is mostly within Stearns County, although a small portion of the city extends west into Pope County. The city was laid out in 1886 when the Soo Railroad was extended to the area, and a post office has been in operation there since that time. Brooten was settled primarily by people of Scandinavian and German descent. The city is reached through Minnesota Highway 55. Nearby communities include Belgrade, Elrosa, Greenwald, Grove Lake, Padua, Regal, Sedan, and Terrace. St. Cloud, Minnesota is about sixty miles east of Brooten.
