Buffalo Lake, Minnesota is in Renville County. Surveyed in 1881, the town was named for a small lake that was then located just north of town. The area became settled as a stopping place and watering hole for horse-drawn wagons and United States military troops making the trip from Fort Ridgely to Hutchinson. The community has had a post office since 1882. In order to drain marshland, the 40-acre lake was drained in order to provide more land for farming.
