Buffalo Lake, Minnesota is in Renville County. Surveyed in 1881, the town was named for a small lake that was then located just north of town. The area became settled as a stopping place and watering hole for horse-drawn wagons and United States military troops making the trip from Fort Ridgely to Hutchinson. The community has had a post office since 1882. In order to drain marshland, the 40-acre lake was drained in order to provide more land for farming. US Highway 212 is the main route to and from the city. Nearby communities include Bird Island, Biscay, Fernando, Heatwole, Hector, Stewart, and West Lynn. Minneapolis, Minnesota is about seventy-five miles east, and Saint Cloud is about seventy-five miles north of Buffalo Lake.
