Buhl, Minnesota is a small city in Saint Louis County. US Highway 169 is the main route to and from the community. Nearby towns include Grant, Kinney, Chisholm, and Mountain Iron. Duluth is about seventy-five miles southeast of Buhl. Like other towns in the area, The area of Buhl was settled initially during logging operations in the late 1800s. At around the same time, iron mining operations were beginning in the rgion. Frank H. Buhl, president of the Sharon Ore Company, platted the town on a forty acre plot. The Sharon Ore Company built a large hotel, which became known as the Olson Hotel after it was purchased by Swan D. Olson. Buhl was incorporated in 1901, after the Great Northern Railway built a road from Swan River into Buhl. Before long, the new town had stores, a village hall, fire department, water system, light plant, library, a school, and banks.
