Canby is in Yellow Medicine County in southwestern Minnesota. The community was platted in 1876, soon after the railroad came through the area, and named for U.S. Army General Edward Canby, who had been killed by Indians the year before. The area was settled in the early 1870s by John Swenson, who built a store there, where a post office was established in 1874. Growth was slow until the railroad came through, but the town grew quickly after the Winona & St. Peter Railroad Company platted the town site. Canby was incorporated as a village in 1879 and as a city in 1905. Canby Creek flows through the city, and US Highway 75 and Minnesota Highway 68 are the main routes through the city. Nearby communities include Boyd, Burr, Clarkfield, Dawson, Ghent, Green Valley, Hazel Run, Hendricks, Ivanhoe, Normania, Porter, Providence, Spring Creek, St. Leo, and Wilno, as well as the South Dakota communities of Astoria, Brandt, Gary, Moritz, and Toronto. Watertown, South Dakota is about forty-eight miles northwest of Canby.
