Situated along the Mississippi River in northeastern Hennepin County, Champlin, Minnesota is a northern suburb of Minneapolis. Surrounding or nearby neighborhoods include Andover, Anoka, Blaine, Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids, Corcoran, Dayton, Ham Lake, Maple Grove, Oak Park, Osseo, Ramsey, and Rogers. The area that was to become Champlin was first settled by European-Americans when Father Louis Hennepin, Michael Accult, and Peter Dulay were captured by the Sioux Indians. A trading post was later established there, and Charles Miles formed the first permanent settlement, then known as Marshall Township, which was later split into the townships of Champlin and Dayton. Champlin was named for US Navy Commodore Stephen Champlin, who served in the War of 1812, and whose family was involved in real estate transactions in Champlin. In 1947, a portion of Champlin Township was incorporated as a village and, in 1971 the village and township joined to form the city of Champlin. The community experienced slow but steady growth up until 1980 when its population began to grow rapidly, almost doubling by the time of the 1990 census.
