Incorporated as a village in 1854, and as a city in 1904, Cleveland is in Le Sueur County, Minnesota. Cleveland was founded as a temperance town, and named for the Ohio city by that name. Beginning in 1858, Cleveland and Le Sueur were engaged in a rivalry over the designation of the county seat. In 1875, a group of Cleveland citizens organized a militia to take the county seat by force. After holding it for one year, a compromise was reached, whereby Le Center was named the county seat, and remains so. The main route through the city is Minnesota Highway 99. St. Peter is west of the city, while Ottawa is northwest, and Le Center is northeast of Cleveland. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are about sixty-five miles to the northeast.
