Situated along US Highway 2, between Grand Rapids and Deer River, the city of Cohasset is in Itasca County, Minnesota. The community was formed as a railway stop, originally known as Bass Brook Township. A post office was established in 1892, and the village was incorporated in 1902. In 1916, the village of Cohasset and Bass Brook Township were separated, and in 1957 it became one governmental unit again, but in 1975 the merger was dissolved, and Bass Brook incorporated as a city in 1992, while the post office remained in Cohasset. Northeast of Cohasset, along US Highway 169, are the communities of Coleraine, Taconite, Marble, Pengilly and Keewatin, while Hill City is south of Cohasset along Highway 169. Deer River, Ball Club and Bena are northwest of the city along US Highway 2, while La Prairie, Blackberry, Warba, Swan River and Wawina are southeast. The Chippewa National Forest is east of Cohasset.
