Cologne, Minnesota is in Carver County, about thirty miles from Minneapolis. The main routes through the city are US Highway 212 and Minnesota Highway 284. Cologne is just south of Benton, which was annexed to Cologne in the 1970s. It is north of the small community of Gotha, along Highway 284. Along US Highway 212, Bongards, Norwood, and Young America are west of Cologne, while Dahlgren is to the east. Waconia is six miles north of Cologne, and Shakopee is fifteen miles to the east. The community was platted and incorporated in 1881, and named for Cologne, Germany. Built in 1872, the Hastings and Dakota Railroad was a significant factor in the early growth of the community. The depot was closed in 1977, and the roundhouse and water tanks have been demolished, but the railroad continues to pass through the town. The city’s population nearly doubled in the 1990s, and has seen slower but steady growth since.
