Columbia Heights, Minnesota is in the southern tip of Anoka County. The main routes through the city are Minnesota Highway 47, which becomes University Avenue within the city, and Minnesota Highway 65, which is Central Avenue. A first-ring northern suburb of Minneapolis, Columbia Heights is bordered by Minneapolis on the south. Other surrounding or nearby cities include Brooklyn Center, Fridley, Lauderdale, Mounds View, New Brighton, Robbinsdale, and St. Anthony. The separate city of Hilltop is entirely enclosed by Columbia Heights. In 1898, Columbia Heights separated from Fridley Township and was formed as a village. Its name was selected through a contest. Columbia Heights was chartered as a city in 1921. The city’s downtown district is centered on the intersection of 40th Avenue NE and Central Avenue, and includes the Heights Theater, the public library, county offices, and several businesses, with Central Avenue forming a commercial district along its length. After more than doubling in size during the 1950s, the city’s population has remained relatively stable since 1960, with minor gains and losses in population.
