Dassel, Minnesota is in Meeker County. Named for Bernard Dassel, an official with the St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, the town was platted in 1869, the year that the railroad reached the area, and a post office was established. Most of the early settlers of Dassel came from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Virginia, but they were shortly followed by Swedish immigrants, particularly from Västergötland and Värmland. The first general store was operated by James H. and Charles A. Morris in 1869. Dassel was incorporated in 1878. US Highway 12 and Minnesota Highway 15 are the chief routes to and from the city. Dassel is situated east of Darwin and Litchfield and west of Cokato Smith Lake and Howard Lake, south of Kingston, and north of Hutchinson. Other nearby communities include Albion Center, Albright, Forest City, French Lake, Greenleaf, Jennie, Knapp, Lamson, Rassat, Rice Lake, Sherman, Stockholm, Strout, Waverly, West Albion, and Winsted. Minneapolis is about fifty-five miles east of Dassel.
