The city of Dilworth is in central-western Clay County, in western Minnesota. The community began as a railroad station for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883. Originally, it was named Richardson, but its name was changed the following year in honor of Joseph Dilworth, a director of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Up until 1906, Dilworth was a small station with a siding that served two grain elevators, but which had no depot building or agent. When the Northern Pacific sites in Fargo became crowded, Dilworth was chosen as a site for divisional terminal facilities, and the railroad bought nearly five hundred acres of land for its new operations, which included a roundhouse building. Dilworth was incorporated as a village in 1911. Dilworth is situated along US Highway 10, between Fargo, North Dakota and Glyndon, Minnesota.
