Also known as EGF, the city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota is in western Polk County. The city is situated along the eastern bank of the Red River of the North, across from Grand Forks, North Dakota, from which it derives its name. East Grand Forks developed on both sides of the river, with the main portion of the town on the north side, while the area south of the river is known as The Point, as the land narrows almost to a peninsula at the confluence of the Red River and the Red Lake River. East Grand Forks Township was organized in 1882, and incorporated as a city in 1887. A post office has been in East Grand Forks since 1883. US Highway 2, US Business Route 2, and Minnesota Highway 220 are the chief routes through the city, while Interstate Highway 29 is just west of the city, and US Highway 81 is to the south. Nearby communities include Bygland, Fisher, Kelly, Key West, Merrifield, and Sherack. Crookston, Minnesota is about twenty-five miles southeast of East Grand Forks.
