Effie, Minnesota is in northern Itasca County. Minnesota Highway 1 runs east-west through the city, serving as its main street for a short stretch, while Highway 38 also serves the city, intersecting Highway 38 within the city limits. County Road 225 forms the eastern boundary of Effie, while County Road 236 forms its western border, and County Road 255 forms the northern borders of the city. The city was formed as a logging community in the early 1900s as logging camps sprung up throughout the region. A post office began in 1903, with Eva R. Wenaus as postmaster, and the town was named for her daughter, Effie Wenaus. In 1912, the Minneapolis and Rainy River Railway built a station in Effie, largely so that logs could be moved from the area by rail. The focus of the city’s commerce shifted to agriculture in the 1930s when the logging boom began to fade, and the rail line was abandoned. Effie is just west of the Bois Forte Reservation. The Koochiching State Forest is north of Effie, and the Chippewa National Forest is south. Nearby communities include Craigville to the north, and Bigfork to the south, as well as Bowstring, Dora Lake, Marcell, Oslund, Pinetop, Pomroy, Talmoon, Wildwood, and Wirt. Grand Rapids is about fifty miles south, Hibbing about sixty miles southeast, and Red Lake about seventy miles west of Effie.
