Named for Dorothy Molter, a legendary resident of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, who lived alone on the Isle of Pines on Knife Lake, fifteen miles from the nearest road. When she died in 1986, she was the last remaining non-indigenous year-round inhabitant of the BWCAW. Her cabins and personal belongings were saved, and have been reassembled in Ely, Minnesota.

The annual event was began by the Ely Nordic Ski Club in 1984, as a cross-country ski race from Tower to Ely, and local businesses and craftspeople set up booths at the finish line. Over the years, it has changed names a few times, and currently includes a variety of events and competitions, including snowshoeing, dogsledding, snowmobile rides, live music, food vendors, and several crafts.
