The city of Elysian, Minnesota is situated mostly in southern Le Sueur County, with a portion of the community extending into Waseca County. Elysian was platted in 1856, and named for Elysium in Greeky mythology. The city was incorporated in 1884. Elysian Township, organized in 1858, is a distinct governmental entity just outside of the city. The city and township are surrounded with several bodies of water, including Lake Elysian, Lake Frances and Rays Lake, from which the city benefits greatly from summer tourism. Minnesota Highway 60 runs east-west through the city, with the city of Waterville to the east and the smaller community of Greenland to the west, with Madison Lake further west. The town of Lake Elysian is south of the city, along the southern banks of the lake. Mankato is about twenty miles west of Elysian.
