Embarrass Township is in Saint Louis County, on the Mesabi Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota. The unincorporated community of Embarrass is situated in the southeastern portion of the township. Embarrass is about twenty miles northeast of Virginia, twenty-five miles southwest of Ely, ten miles south of Tower, and eighty-five miles north of Duluth. Other nearby communities include Aurora, Babbitt, Biwabik, and Hoyt Lakes. The Embarrass River flows through the east-central and southeastern portions of the township and through the community of Embarrass, while the Pike River flows through the western part of the township, and Bear Creek flows through the eastern portion of the township. The town and the township were named for the Embarrass River, which was so named because of the many obstacles that the river posed to French fur trappers, who had difficulty navigating difficult river. So, the French called it Rivière d'Embarras, which translates as "River of Obstacles" or "River of Obstructions." The Embarrass River is a tributary of the Saint Louis River, which begins just west of Babbitt and flows southwest, turning south to create a gap between the Embarrass Mountains to the east and the Mesabi Range to the west, the emptying into the Saint Louis River southeast of Eveleth.
