Situated in southeastern Renville County, the city of Fairfax, Minnesota is served by Minnesota Highways 4 and 19. The community was platted in 1882, and named for Fairfax County in Virginia, the hometown of some of its early residents. A post office was established in Fairfax in 1882, and the city was incorporated in 1888. Since 1920, its population has remained basically stable, but with a trend toward slight decreases in its population numbers. Fairfax is roughly halfway between Franklin, to the west, and Gibbon, to the east. Mankato is about fifty miles southeast of Fairfax.
