Named for Benjamin Franklin, the small town of Franklin, Minnesota was platted in 1882. The city is located on Minnesota State Highway 19, east of US Highway 71, in southern Renville County. Franklin is east of Morton, Beaver Falls, North Redwood, and Redwood Falls, and west of Fairfax. Mankato is about sixty miles southeast of Franklin. On the fourth weekend of July, the town hosts the Catfish Derby Days, a three-day event that includes a contest to catch the largest catfish, dancing, parades, volleyball, softball, chess tournaments and other contests.
