Founded in 1887, Gibbon, Minnesota is in Sibley County. The small city was named for General John Gibbon, a commandant at Fort Snelling from 1880 to 1882. Gibbon is situated along Minnesota Highway 19, near its intersection with County Road 2, in south-central Minnesota. Gibbon is east of Fairfax and Franklin, and west of Winthrop and Gaylord. Other nearby communities include Bernadotte, Fernando, and Lafayette. Mankato is about fifty miles southeast, and Minneapolis is about eighty miles northeast of Gibbon.
